A DSC 1832 will have 1 (one) Motion Detector w/delay entry and 1 (one) 2 wire Smoke Detector. As near as I can tell, would this be the correct programming sequence;

Do you have 1 keypad and is it enrolled? Keypad needs to be enrolled for Partition and Slot assignment(Partition 1, slot one, next keypad would be partition 1 slot 2, after everything is hooked up(keypads, receiver,. ) do 902 to enabe supervision, then 903 after a minuste to see that panel sees all expanders, receivers, output mudules, additional keypads, etc..
Don't have the manual in fron of me.
For just the 2 zones, in location 001, enter the 2 digit string for Entry 1(motion detector), and then 2 digits for the 2 wire smoke, enter 000's to complete 001's location(total of 16 or 32 digit string), I usually use 4 wire smokes, will have to get back on exact. Using the PGM allows a reset(power removed).

If this is not Monitored, you will want to go to sections 015, and 380 I believe to disable Communications, and disable telephone line monitor, to keep from having a trouble light.
Alpha Keypad is easiest to Program With.

I had to pretty much rewire everything. The smoke and motion now work, The only thing making me pull my hair out is figuring out how to program the phone dialer. It is a simple residential phone that I need to program an area code and seven digits. I have dial tone at the panel. There are only two wires for phone.

You should install an RJ 31X Jack, Big 8 Conductor Cord(4 conductors used)Red and green is from Telco, and the gray and brown go to premise(house phones) this provides "Line Seizure"(It disconnects house phones during an alarm so if one was off hook, it would stop it from dialing.
Will see if I can find a diagram for the RJ 31X wiring.
A Telephone Test set will allow you to hear dial tone break, and the tones dialing, some can read the number, with out loading down the line.

All those pictures are confusing, The one on the link above is accurate, basically you just use 4 of the 8 condictors(red, green, gray and brown, cut the others off as most will do, I use for tampers, so if a loop with the wiring is cut, or if it is unplugged, it will sound the siren, unless I shut down that sone to allow phone cord removal, Take that cord and plug onto jack, after you provide dial tone to red and green, and the gray and brown will connect to your house phones red and green.
Alarm system is between dial tone and phones. If wired correctly, when you unplug the big alarm cord, phone will work, just not through panel, there are little jumpers that reconnect the phone line within the jack, if you look real close, you can see.

The agony of defeat!

It's time to quit and leave it up to the Professionals. I was trying to help a friend. The Motion works and the panel will answer the phone. I have tried everything and cannot get the Smoke to work. If triggered with the test button the red light on the smoke lights but does not trip Pgm2. It won't reset either. I forget the make of the smoke, I3 or W4-b something... It has the following 5 positions which I wired as follows;
+ I connected this to the Aux +
+ Not used
- I connected to Pgm2 (set at 08 for Standard Fire)
NO I connected to Z2
C I connected to Common near Z2
The 5.6K EOL I put @ + and -

The panel shows Trouble code 5

It's funny, I installed same panel from scratch with 5X the amount of devices at this same friends house last year and had no problems at all. Now it's the same panel with only one motion, one smoke/heat, and one keypad and it fought me tooth and nail! I'm hoping that when they get the Monitoring Co. established that they can access the panel via phone and see what is wrong.

Earlier it sounded like you had the smoke going.
You say 2 wire, but sounds like 4 wire? Will have to dig out the Manual, If Panel has a diagram look real close at the resistor used for smokes. and its connections to power and pgm out.
Also in the Manual.

2 wire smokes get the positive from Aux+, the ground is through PGM 2.
When using 2 wire smokes, Program Location 009 last 2 of the 4 digits to be 04, and uses 2.2K resistor.
If using a 4 wire and connecting through a zone input, the resistor is 5.6K, and need to program 03 for the last 2 of the 4 digits in location 009. Then program 08 in the digit string for 001 for the 4 wire smoke.(zone definitions)

Don't give up yet.
By using the PGM 2 for smokes, it allows power to be removed for about 5 seconds to reset the detector by using *72, or reset button on Keypad.

I was told initially (before I saw it) that it was a 2 wire smoke but it was indeed a 4 wire. They only hooked up 2 wires and cut the others. It was the same with the motion in which only 2 wires were connected. There was enough slack where I was able to make the proper 4 wire connections to each device. The smoke + is on Aux+ and the - on Pgm2 set for Stnd. Fire (08) The NO position is on Z2 and the C to common.

I think I may be confused as to how exactly EOL Resistors are placed? While I understand the reasoning for their use, it appears to me that the actual practical application of them can be confusing to a non professional like myself. For example:

The only way I was able to get the Motion Detector to work was in the NC position with the 5.6K resistor connected "in-line" with the NC wire. The smoke only has the NO position which to me would be in conflict with the system. It is my understanding that the EOL resistor is used to provide a low voltage/current which the panel monitors to ensure wiring integrity or to simulate a NC contact.

The resistor will be in series with the Normally closed loop as you describe, but should be 2.2K for the Motion. If the Motion has 2 tamper terminals, you can place your resistor in the motions Zone and a tamper terminal, and the wire for that loop to the other zone and tamper terminal, It is not tampered, but allows a place to park the resistor.
Try the resistors directly on the zone terminals with no other wires connected to verify correct programming, then install resistor in the device.
If the Smoke is Only NO, it needs an End of Line resistor module, if wiring is cut, power is lost to the module, relay deenergizes, opening the resistor.
Others will be NC.

Ah Ha! An EOL resistor Module! The illustration for that smoke clearly showed a module but I assumed it was only used for multiple smokes. That could be the root of the whole problem. He ordered a DSC Smoke which we have used before with no problems.

Too bad you don't have terminal for NC, then you could Just program like as a NC loop, and you wouldn't need the module, the resistor does the supervising.
Try the resistor at the panel to see your programming is correct, if you have problems.
Still use the PGM output to allow resetting smoke(s).
In the old days we used a NC switch at the panel, and pressing would remove power to allow reset of the detectors.
