I am new to these forums... I too am having a problem with my Baby Huey peeling on the floor. It seems he does it out of spite at times. To start from the beginning... Huey is a new to our family... he is a rescue from our local shelter. He is a beautiful white Chihuahua with fawn colored spots with a little crooked grin... when I first laid eyes on him I knew he was going to be the latest addition to our family. We have two older Pugs (13 & 8 years old) along with 2 indoor cats and one outdoor cat... so we do have a house full. We spend every waking moment with our babies. Everyone in the home is disabled but we function. After bringing Huey home I began to notice things that terrified him... men in ball caps... doorways... quick movements are just to name a few. After taking him to my vet my worst thoughts and nightmares were confirmed... Baby Huey has been abused... his crooked grin is from a broken jaw. I was horrified and brought to tears. He is at least 4 years old with a heart murmur we are watching closely. It breaks my heart to think of what he has endured in his little life. The shelter advised they didn't have any back ground on him because he was abandoned... not even a name... we gave him his name. He loves to ride in a car... loves to walk on a leash is not afraid of the cane I have to use and doesn't mind a bath... he is very shy at times which I can understand but when he sees the pugs getting attention he joins in.

He is walked every hour given praise and treats... if I have to leave him to go to the store, aquatic therapy or for any other reason... he will pee on my bathroom floor... I thinking that is spite. If he is not getting constant attention... when everyone is home... he will go pee on the mud room floor... he sneaks... he knows he has done something wrong because he will too hide when it is found... he has his own crate and seems to be content sleeping in it at night. Like I said he is walked hourly... typically around 10 minutes. When I leave... my longest absence is 2 hours when at the pool 3 days a week. I have showed him and scolded him when he is caught and take him outside immediately. He is neutered. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Huey has been here for 5 weeks. Thank you all for reading... I know how valuable time is to everyone.

There obviously was a lot of abuse. Maybe that's the reason he urinates whenever/wherever. I don't believe dogs think like people. I don't believe dogs act of spite. Maybe it's fear. Maybe it's something else.

He's been with you 5 weeks - he needs more time.

Have you tried any/all of the above suggestions?

He is hiding because he is scared not because he understands did something 'bad'.

Stop the 'showing and scolding'. He thinks you are angry about him peeing instead of where he pees. Clean up his messes with a cleaner designed to eliminate the odor. If you catch him, pick him up and him outside. A sharp no is okay but do not make a fuss or try to shame him. Keep him outside until he potties. Do not play with him until after he pees. Then come the treats, etc.

Did the vet check his bladder? He may be having issues that haven't been uncovered yet. It may not be his fault if he needs to go while you are out.

Does he know how to let you know he needs to go outside?

You may need to crate him when you go out. Part of the problem may be that he is upset when left in the bathroom where his crate provides safety.

Thank you for moving the thread and for the responses, they are truly appreciated. Since I posted a couple of days ago... no accidents :). When we brought him home we expected some bumps along they way... after seeing how terrified he gets everyone has slowed down... all of our as animals are like our kids... constant love and attention. I got hurt 3 1/2 years ago... I have had 8 surgeries 6 of which have been major spinal surgeries so my cats and my parents pugs have been a huge part of my recovery as well as therapy.

Huey is such a sweet little boy and is starting to come out of his shell. His crate is in our dining room along with the other crates. It is the center of the house and today I found him sitting in his place... just hanging out. He has two chew toys I got him... new just for him... as well as new doggie bedding... we have a community toy box in the living room. I had my heart set on buying an English Bulldog... we donate our newspapers and aluminum cans to our local shelter... after watching a news program on the shelter I knew I didn't want to buy a pedigree dog (not that there is anything wrong with that)... I wanted to adopt an animal that needed me. The first day I met him... he was in a play yard at the shelter... she asked if I wanted to hold him. I sat on the bench with him for less than 3 minutes. I looked down while talking with the lady who worked there and he was sound asleep in my arms. That was pretty much it... he stole my heart. It's kind of funny... going through all of the surgeries... painful recoveries... pain I didn't think a human could live through... I will never be the same... I thought I was rescuing him... I believe it Huey who has rescued me. Every step I take is painful... but I look forward to those steps now. Like I said he is white with some very faint fawn spots... he has jet black eyes and nose... the skin around his mouth is black... I swear he smiles all the time now, it is absolutely adorable. He wants to be with me all of the time, so I am crating him when I leave and cannot take him with me. I feel he is beginning to learn he is safe... no danger here with the exception of one of the pugs trying to steal his treat... if you know a pug you know that's true.

Huey sounds like a cutie. He also sounds like is going to take a lot of patience. If you have any questions about him, just add them to this thread. Even if you don't have a question, we love updates (and pictures if you would like to share.)

He seems to be the companion animal that you need and you are what he needs. You may feel sorry for him at times, but he needs for you to be yourself and to keep up obedience training. Giving him small 'jobs' such as picking up dropped pens or putting away his toys and/or doing tricks can help boost his confidence. Positive reinforcements such as treats and attention can go a long way, but I think you have already figured that out.

Be consistent and patient and he will do even better. I hope your medical condition improves.

Aww thank you so much, I think he is quite handsome. Wanted to let you know we are at 5 days with no accidents. I am very proud of him. We are working on tricks... he is just getting "sit" mastered. When we are in the yard and he potties I make a fuss over him letting him know what a good boy he is... at first I think he thought I was nuts... now he gets extremely excited and spins in circles. We live in the country so we have a huge yard a nice sized garden along with fruit trees as well as tame blackberries. Every year the pugs get their very own grape tomato plant... (I call them the farmer pugs)... Huey now knows exactly which tomato plant is theirs he loves them... it's hilarious. He loves the blackberries too. I will post a another pic or two after his bath... the grass was mowed today... he looks like an alien. Have a great day!!

Thank you very much!! I love cats and have two of my own. They are Seal Point Himmies. Ozzy and Harriet... Ozzy is 10 and Harriet is 9. Ozzy is the one one the outside steps... Harriet is on the quilts. They had just gotten their haircuts... Mom has allergies so when we moved in haircuts became a regular thing. The are both inside cats... Ozzy likes to hang out on the steps every once in a while... but is never left alone outside. We also have a Russian Blue named BooBoo that was rescued from an intersection in Pittsburgh as a kitten. I was fostering him until I found him a forever home... Mom fell in love with him. He started as a strictly indoor cat but he loves it outside... so he's in and out. Like I said we have a full house.
