My cat is 9 years old and a female. She keep peeing on the bathroom rugs. We have a very small bathroom so we can't really fit a litter box. She was my grandmothers cat but she kept peeing on her bed. We took in her cat because we thought she was peeing on the bed because her and the other cat didn't get along. What could be wrong with her? Me and my mom would call the vet but we don't want to have to pay a lot of money for the vet to see the cat if there's nothing wrong with her. But if there is anything major going on we want to help the cat because we love her. So do you guys have any idea what this could be? And what should we do? Thank you for the help! :)

She could have a bladder infection or something else wrong with her urinary system. She needs to be checked by a vet.

Okay thank you. We were most likely going to call the vet anyway because its been going on for about 4 days now, but money is really tight for us right now. We just wanted to see what could possibly be wrong with her. Thank you for the information :)

Is there an animal shelter near you? They know of low-cost vets (where they take the shelter animals) and may even give out health certificates to help defray costs. And be sure to tell the vet of your money situation. Usually they will work with you on an easy-payment plan or even give you a reduced exam fee.

Getting checked by a vet is a decent first step, but as most cat owners find out, cats peeing in inconvenient places, the problem really stems from stress due to big changes or territory issues.

The first thing is: don't scream or hit the cat. That will only make the cat more unstable. He/she needs to feel secure at your home.

Second: don't bother with traditional cleaning products. I had two cats that peed in the same spot in the dining room decades apart because they could apparently smell some other marking there. Go out and get some enzyme-based cleaning products... here are ones a professional cat behaviorist recommends: http://www.catwhispererproducts.com/enzyme-cleaners/

Third: the regular litter boxes you get at pet stores are usually too small for full grown cats. After trial and error, I found that the big, deep tupperware bins you can buy at walmart for storage are a good bet. I would suggest buying 2 of them and placing them in easily accessible areas in your house (not the cold scary basement). For your cat, definitely get Precious cat litter (blue bag) which is recommended by just about every expert. Also get the Precious Cat Attract litter (red bag), and do a mix of the two in your litter boxes so that it's about 3-4 inches deep.

Fourth: have you ever used an old fashioned out-house? It's DISGUSTING, and after one visit, you'd rather go anywhere else. That's basically what a litter box is. Of course we don't have to walk on our excrement, and cats do. So think about trying to scoop out the box once a day or every other day if you can't do more.

Last: All of the above is what I've tested and tried and read about with the various cats I've had over the years. My next comment is based purely on observing how my cat has responded to this and many people may disagree with me. Totally fine. And this option also may not be affordable, or accessible for you, just want to throw it out there.

When I started feeding my cat raw food (frozen medallions of meat/bone/organ), I immediately noticed that her waste stopped smelling. Not "cat lady can't smell it anymore," but real "no one who visited knew I had a cat from how my home smelled." This doesn't have to do with your cat peeing on the bed, but may improve the cat's quality of life, and along with the changes I suggested above, may make him/her feel more comfortable in your home. Read up on raw cat food and see if it's an option for you.
