    Hi Barb barb

It is definitely a good idea to shut off the WATER MAIN itself... will shut off hot water automatically as well.

I would definitely agree regarding shutting off the main not just the heater. I do some work in a resort home area where owners are gone for weeks at a time. A toilet fill line burst at one home and ran 300,000 gallons in a month totaling the home. I'd consider setting the heater to pilot only rather than vacation mode.

Vacation mode and pilot mode are the same setting on a gas valve/thermostat... just labeled differently on some gas valves/thermostats... ;)
