Does multi stage heat pump require multi stage thermostat?
I'm confused, I have two different contractors telling me two different stories. One says the unit we have switches on its own from low to high stage A/C, the other says we need to change out the thermostat to make it switch from low to high and when, etc..

The unit is a heil PHM348KT0A1 and the thermostat we currently have, (which was installed by the same contractor who installed the A/C in 2009) is a Braeburn 1000

The contractor who wants to replace and says our system will never work correctly without it, wants to install a Honeywell focus pro 6000 at a cost of over 400 installed.

The other contractor says that's not required, just better for energy costs and whatever.

I can see the difference between the units we have and the one they are recommending, just wondering if it's really needed or not.

If it is a heatpump you must have a 2 stage stat, if it is a ac no. honeywell 6000 stats only run about $135
