VERY shallow recessed housing in kitchen soffit... help
    I have a question.

I am trying to replace an old style square type recessed light housing that sits on the soffit over my kitchen sink. It's 120v
The problem is.. the housing is VERY shallow. The bulb (normal 60w) is angled, allowing the housing to be very shallow. The housing is like only 4 inches high.. and I can't go any higher because the housing butts right up against a 4" drain pipe, so I have no room to go higher. Anyone have any ideas? I have looked in stores and online for something that shallow but have had no luck. I find it hard to believe that they had housing this shallow 40 years ago, but I can't find it today.
    Thanks for your help.

It's probably not code anymore - too small a space for an incandescent bulb. I think you have to close in the square and install a tiny round LED fixture (very little heat generated) or a hanging incandescent fixture.

Small fluorescent or LED strip will work. You can also use a can conversion kit that uses a pendant

So you're suggesting I just completely close the hole and put an LED strip on the outside (not recessed) of the soffit? So, how would you advise doing this? Just run the 120 wire through the then-closed hole in the soffit or install a junction box?

Use an old work outlet box and wire into that. LED strips are light and would easily mount to the box. Put the fixture parallel with the work surface.
