When on high of a two speed prostandard drum fan, the motor over heats and shuts down, what's up ?

Well to my mind, the simplest thing to do is to make sure any and all cooling vents are clear.

It is quite possible that the motor is starting to fail and should be replaced. Personally, I would not fool with it. If the unit is several years old, I would just replace the entire unit.
