    Pipe freezing over
I've narrowed it down to when my system freezes over but don't know why it is doing it. On my thermostat, if I turn the system "off" and put the fan to "auto" rather than "on", within an hour, the pipe coming into the house to my unit freezes up. Also, when it's in this state, my unit outside never stops working. If I have the system "off" and the fan "on", it does not freeze over

Hopefully I can get some answers

If fan is running then either air filter is cloged up or unit is low on freon. With system off ac is not running so it can't freeze

A friend of mine said it could be a defective thermostat considering the outside unit runs at all times

No, the "T" stat is set to off and the unit outside is still going, the only time I've seen it stop is if I flip the breaker

Will the outdoor unit shut off if you turn off the power to the furnace at the breaker? If not, it sounds to me like a contactor welded shut.

I agree sounds like you need a new contactor on the outdoor unit

Make sure you turn breaker off to indoor and outdoor unit before replacing

Does the outdoor unit shut off only when you turn off it's breaker OR will it shut off if you turn off the FURNACE breaker? If it shuts off when the furnace breaker is turned off, the contactor is NOT the problem.

The heat pump unit outside ONLY shutsdown when I turn off it's own breaker. It does not shut down when I turn off the Furnace breaker
