Do you mean apply for it in Family Court? If that is required by SSI then yes. The taxpayer shouldn't have to take all of the burden.

I applied for disability for my son, and he qualified. My x pays insurance and child support is done by us. What burden is on tax payers I don't understand. Why do I have to go through the court system?

I have a question for you - why the "between us" part istead of the Court? There must be a reason.

Good question it doesn't matter if we go through the court system, I will if I have to. Its just been done this way since my son was born, and its worked. I've never had a problem receiving, so if it works this way why would I go far out of my way to get this done and receive the same money

You need to go through the courts for support so it is fully documented. That way you can receive the proper ssi payments. Also if you are receiving or will receive other benefits then it may affect the child support you are receiving. What does the child have that qualifies him/her for ssi ?

You started by saying 'will I have to take my x for support.' That implies that he hasn't paid a dime. That's why I said the taxpayer should not share the burden (they already do with SSI).

Now you say he does pay support by private agreement. SSI needs more proof than your say so, because they need to know that he is paying enough, for starters.

Welcome to the world of gov't benefits. You have to do it their way. They don't want it to be easy because they are already overburdened financially.

I personally would go "far out of my way" to protect my child's rights. But that's just me.

And Joy summed it up - because if you want to get Government benefits you had better be prepared to play by the Government's rules. You don't consider SSI to be funded by the taxpayers (by the way)?
