A few months ago we moved in with my sister and her family. But it just got so intense living there. So my husband and I moved out but they still have our stuff. They won't respond toany of my text messages so now my husband is upset and would like to get the cops involved and go over there and get our stuff back. What should I do? Will the cops follow us to there house?

Many times the police will escort you to a property you were renting to retrieve your belongings if you left under hostile circumstances. I would call your local police department and ask if they offer this service, and if not, what's your next step to retrieving your belongings?

If they do offer to escort you they'll likely request that you set up an appointment with the homeowner to retrieve your belongings. The police are merely there to make sure you get your belongings without any incident. They will not force your sister to give you back your belongings. That's what courts are for.

If you ask the police to accompany you then yes they will. But don't expect them to settle any ongoing disputes. At this point it is a civil matter. Your best route may be to go to small claims court and get a judgement for your property and with that the police can have a bit more authority over the situation.

Except that small claim courts don't usually have jurisdiction to issue writs of repelvin. The best small claims could do would be to give a judgment for the value of the property.

But if the other party shows up it can become part of the judgement if they say they will give the things back rather then face a monitary judgement. It happens all the time.
