I am trying to move a switch that controls the garage door and other lights, which was wired by the previous homeowner. The switch has two screws. There are two romex wires coming into the box, all whites are together with a wire nut, all ground wires are together with a nut and the two black wires are connected to the screws on the switch.

Do I need to snake two wires from the other side of the door into the box or can I just snake one wire, tie black with black, white with white, etc. and use a different kind of switch?

If you are eliminating the old switch and installing a new switch at a different location, take the 2 wires attached to old switch and attach to cable going to new switch. Put a black cover plate on old box, DO NOT bury in wall.

All you need to do is find the hot lead for the existing switch. In the new box, install a piece of 14/2 Romex that you pull back to the old box. Take the hot black lead and wire nut it to the white piece of romex from the new wire, put black tape on it. Take the new black lead and wire nut it to the black light wire. Connect grounds the same way. Install the old switch in the new box, put black tape on the white switch end, cover the old box with a cover plate. What you have done is make a "switch loop", using the old switch box as a junction box, perfectly acceptable.

What kind of switch is this. This doesn't sound like the wiring for low voltage push button switch for a garage door opener. The wiring sounds like the wiring for a line voltage toggle switch. How could a single pole toggle switch control a garage door.
