How do you tell the difference between the intake and exhaust valves on a briggs and stratton 18.5hp motor which is upper and which is lower

Hi,
There are no hard and fast rules for telling them apart or which is oriented on top or bottom. I generally look at the intake and exhaust externally to identify them.
