    Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a citizen of India and was on F-1 from Aug 2001 to Jan2007, and now I am on OPT. In 2006, I received 2,000$ fellowship (nonemployee compensation) from a NJ based company and 2,000$ fellowship from my school (in CT), in addition, to regualr assistanship from my school. I would appreciate, if you could please provide answers to the following queries:

    1) Should I use 1040 NR or NR-EZ to file my returns.

    2) Box 1 of W-2 shows total wages of $20596. Does this include the fellowship I received from my school or that needs to be added separately. Sir/Madam, I already received form 1042-S, and that does not include any description of 2,000$ fellowship.

    3) I also received form 1099-G that suggest a total of $248 in state or local income tax refunds, credits or offset for the tax year 2005. Where should I mention this and what does that mean? (please forgive my ignorance) Also, a received form 1099-Misc from the company with 2000$ mentioned in box 7. reading on this site suggest that I should probably file schedule C or may be schedule C-ez.

    4) Am I still eligible for India-US tax treaty deduction under article 21(2) and can I claim the full amount or Is there a limit on the number of years that deduction could be used for?

    5) I used the fellowships towards conferences (travel and symposium presentation). Can I use that as an itemized deduction?

I would appreciate, any feedback on the querries and look forward for your expert opinion. Also, how much would it cost for me to get my taxes done by a professional

    Thank You in anticipation
    Regards,
    Akhil

    1) Neither! Since you arrived in 2001, the exemption under the F-1 visa expired on 31 Dec 05. You wree a resident alien for 2006. File Form 1040.

    2) Contact the university and FIND OUT.

    3) Schedule C or C-EZ is required for the Form 1099-MISC. If you did not itemize on your 2005 return, you can ignore the Form 1099-G.

    4) No. See #1 above.

    5) Maybe as a employee business expense.
