Hi there, newbie here with a question, I replaced the battery on my craftsman LT1000 model number 917.272059 unfortunately and stupidly through not paying attention I wired up the red cable to the negative terminal on the Battery and the negative to the positive, the result was it blew the 20 amp fuse and probably a few other things as well.

I corrected the wiring on the battery and replaced the 20 amp fuse but on turning the ignition key it just clicks and blows the new fuse. Any help would be greatly appreciated in remedying the problems I have caused.

It may be possible that you shorted out the magnito on your engine and when you try to start it it shorts directly to ground. You should check that first.

Hi cdad and thank you for your reply. Okay now I know where the magneto is on the engine, how would I go about testing to see if it is shorting diectly to ground.

Exactly when does the fuse blow, when you turn the key to ON or when you turn the key to START?

Diodes can cause this.

Hi all and thank you for the answers. To answer hkstroud, the fuse blows when I turn to on. Also I have replaced the starter solenoid but alas it is still blowing. Stratmando says that the Diodes can cause this so next question. Looking at the electrical diagram in owners manual I can see the Diode but I'm damned if I can find it, heck I don't even know what it looks like. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated .

Problem probably solved through watching a video on Youtube. Guy on there had exactly the same problem as I and Stratmando was on the money. The video helped me locate the Diode and sure enough it's blown, the guy on Youtube even put a part number up for the Diode. Just checked on line and our Local Radio Shack has them in stock so I will a couple tomorrow and let you folks know how it turns out.

Suggestion. Be sure to note the way the original diode is connected. Connecting the new one backwards would amount to the same thing as connecting the battery backwards.

You're welcome and thanks for the help everyone. I tested the diode before install for pos and negative, turned the key, fuse didn't blow and it fired right up. Fortunately this tractor is not my grass cutting mower, I removed the deck and use it for hauling stuff around the yard and for blowing snow in winter. Once again many thanks to all for the help and advice.
