Firstly,Windows ME is very unreliable.Even Microsoft have basically washed their hands of it.Hence your defrag problems. The easiest answer would be to go back to Windows 98 SE,or when funds allow, take the plunge and invest in Windows XP.

However,if you do stay with ME,open the task manager, close down all programs except Explorer and the Systray.

    Then defragment your hard drive.

Alternatively, reboot your PC and when it goes 'through the motions' keep clicking F8 on your keyboard, and when prompted, start the OS in safe mode.Defragment your drive and reboot normally.

    All the best,
    Nez.

    Defrag
    Hi,
I agree with the other Expert about SafeMode.
Start your computer, then press and hold down the F8 key, top of the keyboard.
Then, if necessary, use the Up and Down arrows on the keyboard to select SafeMode, then press Enter.
Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools, or whatever path you have to do a Scandisk first. Then, do the Defrag. Be sure to turn off screensavers first. They will interfere with the Defrag.
    Also, ME is the pits.
I use Win98SE, cause I like it over XP and 2000. But, ME isn't really used by many people in the whole world.
    Best of luck,

    Get Rid of it
My best suggestion is to get rid of ME, the worst OS ever made, of course none are perfect, so calling it the worst, is saying a lot.

Get Win98SE or WinXP if you have to, but run away from ME, run away.

Yeah you could probably get win98secheap now for the old one, since it has ME on it, anybody with a little sense won't want it but for parts :D

    Defrag
On the subject of defraggin, get Diskeeper Pro version or O&O Defrag or Perfectdisk, they are all 3 nearly the same, the diskeeper lite version with WinXp does not do the job very well.

I use 2 of the above as on occasion 1 may find a few more fragmented files than the other. ;)
