I have replaced an old ceiling fan with a Hunter Westminster w/ light kit. There are two switches on the wall, one for the light and one for the fan. The wiring in my home seems different than the instructions contemplate. Out of the ceiling, I have one set of wires (black, white and green) and a second set of wires (black and white). The fan has black, white, white with a black stripe and green. I attached fan white to white (w/ ground), tied all the blacks together, tied the grounds together and white (no ground) to the white w/ the black stripe. The lights work fine, but the fan does not respond to the wall switch. The fan operates only with the pull chain. Should I have tied all the whites together and attached a black to the striped wire? Or should I have left one of the blacks unattached?

Try this: connect all white wires together, and all grounds together. Connect one of the black wires to the black from the fan, and the other black wire to the fan's striped wire.

Do not do the above.

If the main power supply is in the ceiling, then your switches are in what is called a "Switch Loop". This means that the power supplying ungrounded (Black) conductors' supply is interrupted and routed to the switches and the back to the fan and light.

Without seeing a picture of the wiring in the ceiling and at the switches, I can only tell you what the connections should be according to the NEC.

Make sure that you turn off the breaker that supplies this circuit. Don't try to be a he-man (or lady) and try to do this while the circuit is hot. Turning the wall switches to :Off: will not protect you.

You must isolate the power supply cable, from the switches and then separate the switch cables. Once that is done you should find the following:

1) The black supply conductor has two white conductors connected to it. Both of these white conductors should have a black band of tape or magic marker around them to show that these conductors are being used as the hot feed to the wall switches.

2) The two black conductors from the switches get connected to the fan and light circuits respectively. The black return for the fan goes to the solid black conductor on the fan. The black return for the light goes to the Black striped conductor on the fan.

3) The white (neutral) from the fan goes to the white in the supply cable.

4) All ground cables get connected together.

I am not sure if this will help give you a better picture or not. It appeared that the room was constructed with a simple on/off switch. That switch turns off most of the power outlets and the ceiling fan. Next to it, someone installed a switch box with two switches for the ceiling fan. There is a dimmer switch for the light and a four speed switch for the fan. The way I currently have it hooked up, the light dimmer switch works perfectly. But the fan speed control does not control the fan.
I may be getting in over my head. I am confused by your step 1. Are you referring to the wiring in the wall? Without looking behind the drywall, it appears that the three wire bundle (based upon where it exits the ceiling is original. My guess is that it is powering the light. The wires with out a ground come out of a hole which is clearly not original with the house.
What becomes of the white from the presumably fan supply? I have a white supply with a ground, a white supply without the ground and only one white for the fan. In short, two supply blacks, two supply whites (4 wires on the supply side) and a white, black and stripe on the fan side. Someone will have to be left alone or two get tied up with one supply.
