Sears ultra soft water softner-250--625.388260
I replaced the bypass valve as it was the cause of a whine and no soft water as the plastic was broken in a few areas... Good for about a month then the whine returned from somewhere inside the softner... not using much salt so I think the soft water isn't working as it should anymore... it was good for a while. Checked the bypass valve and it's still good. The whine is louder with hot water running.

Put in an upside down "T" in the pipes so an air pocket is formed to absorb shocks and vibration. In a PVC pipe system this should take about 15 minutes to do.
