I'm not a handyman so I want to make sure I don't mess this up. My laundry room is Pre-plumbed for hot, cold and a drain. 2 one half inch cpvc pipes for the hot and cold and one 1 1/2 inch drain pipe. They are capped off so what is the proper way to prepare these for shut off values and a p-trap? I assume I need to cut the caps off but the pipes done stick out of the wall very far. If I cut the caps then what's left will be flush with the wall. Then maybe cut the drywall out around the pipe to expose it more? Thanks for any advice you may have!

Shame if all you have left after cutting the caps is pipes that are flush with the wall... shouldn't be that way! Anyway, yeah, you would shut off the water supply, drain pipes, cut caps off and install new shutoffs. You can prime/cement the shutoffs on or you can purchase some PUSH-FIT sharkbite or gatorbite fittings... just push on to proper depth! You may need to add couplings to extend the pipes first (also available as push-fit fittings)... ;)

After the shutoffs you are best to install a single lever shutoff so you can easily shut off water flow to the washing machine at the end of each wash cycle. Be sure to install SS braided hoses, too! WATTS makes a nice washing machine valve shut off (available almost everywhere)... see image below.

In terms of the drain, I would suggest cutting off the cap and then pour a 1/2 gallon of water into the drain. Then, stick a flexible hose or other flexible device (tube, rope, other) into the drain and push it in as far as it will go, but don't go in over 3 feet. If the "device" you stick in comes back wetted, you have a Ptrap installed behind the wall already. If no wetness comes back then you will need to install a Ptrap yourself with a standpipe that is between 24"-30" tall, OK?
