Why does my 18 year old cat suddenly hid under the bed?
BeBe became ill 9 months ago with a thyroid condition and is being treated with a daily methimazole pill. He has now recently been disagnosed with pancreatitis and is being treated with prednizone, two injections by mouth daily. He has gained a pound since adding the prednizone. He seems as loving and sweet as always, looks good, although skinny, eats well, poops well, drinks water in normal amounts, but now he's hiding my bed all day. He comes out when I come home from work and sleeps with me all night, but as soon as we get up he runs under the bed, only to come out to eat and poop. I understand that he is old, but is the medication causing him to hide, warmer weather now that's May? Has anyone experienced this same behavior with their cat. He is everything to me, my pal, my buddy and it's going to break my heart when he goes. The vet will not say how long he has, just to enjoy each day with him.

Steroids have all kinds of effects - my GSD's personality changed so drastically that I took her off steroids.

I also had a dog with pancreatitis, and she pretty obviously felt lousy a lot of the time. That might be it.

I agree - enjoy every day!

Animals tend to hide when they're feeling sick, because it makes them weaker and more vulnerable to attack. It's a strong survival instinct.

Thanks, I agree. I think it's time to get him back to taking pain meds. He doesn't eat when he's taking them, but he feels better and is out in the living room, not under the bed.
