I am having a problem with a constant running toilet. After doing some research, I have decided that the problem is that the water level is too high in the tank. I have also decided that the height of the float needs to be lowered (I have the newer kind-not the float ball). I saw that I need to pinch the metal clip and move it down the metal rod. However, it is already all the way down that metal rod. So now I am not sure what to do. Ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

If the float is all the way down and the water continues to flow... you need to replace that inlet float/valve assembly. Sometimes you can get them apart to clean the seat.. but the ones I've seen aren't considered user servicible.

Lift the float and see if is shuts off, may just need a new assembly.
Water will also run if flapper is not sealing.

Since this has previously worked at the height the fill valve is set at right now, I don't think shortening the fill valve will help you. Here, it sounds like there is something caught up under the fill valve washer. Check out this video to see how you can clean/replace the washer:



FYI, the fill valve can also be shortened, but shouldn't be needed here. However, I will post the info. For others that may want to know about this in the future... ;). Here, shut off the water supply to the toilet and then reach into the toilet tank and feel along the shaft of the fill valve for a 3/4" tall gray sleeve. This sleeve slides up/down and locks the fill valve at the proper height. Pull up on this sleeve and then push the fill valve shaft down an inch or so and then slide the sleeve down until you feel it "click" into place. Turn water on and you should be all set to go.

When you adjusted the tube, you may have screwed the top section out too far. Instructions show you how to set the initial water level.

I think Brian hit on the problem. Lower the assembly and readjust the float can. Good luck, Tom
