I need help with a tub a plumber installed in my basement. He jack hammered the concrete and the drain lines are installed. He put concrete over most of the floor except where the two lines come up to the tub. When I asked why it was left open he said because the floor needs "to stay open because it will make it easier to clean it out." Is this correct because it looks incorrect to leave the earth exposed to the home. Help... please.

Hi RGM

In most states that I know of, it is an accepted practice to leave this area under the tub open... allows access to the PTRAP and the tub waste assembly if ever needed down the road.

If you are concerned, you could lay some plastic in the hole and cover the hole/pipes with gravel, but unless you have major radon issues I wouldn't bother... ;)

Yes where we live radon is high.

Plastic over the hole and fill it in with gravel... better than nothing and won't be a major issue to remove if something should go wrong with the tub drain/assembly... ;)

One more question... will the plastic prevent termites and other peat from coming into the home?

Mark has already answered your question and yet you not only ask it here again but piggy back on another thread, (which I deleted) and asked the same question. One more time. The tub hole is normal and plastic will keep out the bugs. BTom
