A solution has been proposed to cure budget problems and get spending back on track and I'm amazed it has taken so long for politicians to think of it. This proposal should strike an immediate cord with right wing politics and I see it been taken up in so many subtle ways.

Now when you read liberal in this piece, translate as conservative. I see this policy as a little too liberal.
All I know is that it's the left in this country that has a policy of wacking the poor . Not only do they want taxpayer to pay for the poor to murder their children. They also have polices that keep the poor forever locked in their station in life... bound and chained in permanent dependency of the Leviathan.
Then this solution should help you solve your problem. The realities are, Tom, that, as Christ told us, the poor are always with us and I think the operative word is "with". Many people don't want to entertain that concept, that there is an underclass and that we will have to deal appropriately with that certainty. The way out is for those who can to create opportunities to lift the poor. Socialist countries like China can do it, but capitalist countries like yours and mine get poor results. This is because the problems are endemic, not because of government handout, you can't allow people to starve or live in the streets, but because of misdirected policies. If I had to find truly poor here I would have to go into remote indigenous communities and "out of sight, out of mind" truly applies or look for the homeless. I doubt the same is true in your society. But there is a far greater group who are marginalised and too quickly the solution is get a job but how do you do that without skills, the price of bus fare and the availability of opportunity? Government has got to be about creating opportunity at a local level therefore I think businesses that take operations off shore should be penalised with tarrifs

But you see Tom it is no laughing matter, you want to shrugg off constructive critciism because you want to cling to some outmode idea of how things should be. You don't like public spending because you think capitalism should do what is needed for alteristic reasons, but they won't because they don't care. Your FED is destroying your future but who will stop them

Yes I do.. and my mower is not a sit down mower either.. I push it... and my wife and I plant our own shrubs and flowers and I grow my own veggies. I also shovel and use a snow blower when it snows . I also paint my own house ;and do the other maintenance work that is generally required. We wash our own dishes and cook our own food .We wash our own clothing . Anything else ?

It's all in how you measure it, you have to provide the environment where he can be productive or pay him piece rates, but don't exploit by undervaluing his effort. Look it's like this, I pay $50 for my lawn to be mowed or there to be other garden or maintenance work. It might be possible to do this in a bit over an hour or it might take longer. I could get a boy to do it for $20 but then maybe he wouldn't do it right or maybe he wouldn't turn up, but I now have an award winning garden and I don't need to supervise everything he does. The minimum wage is $17 and he works for that in a local factory and it is hardly enough but there are many like this, they need a boost to get over the hump. It isn't that this guy isn't qualified it is lack of opportunity
Forget it Clete. Conservatives here don't believe in a living wage, and they don't want the government helping working poor people either.
