    Second Floor Extension
Hello, we have a two story home where the entry/living room is the full height of the house. The second floor is to the right. We are thinking of extending the second floor over to the left, making the vaulted ceiling area disappear and the upstairs area larger. Is this even possible?

It should be possible, if the added load meets specifications. Call 2 or 3 good contractors. The basic structure cost will vary depending on what you want for open space under the new ceiling and on how big the span is. If the span is too much for just joists, load bearing walls are one option, beams (holding up the joists) the most often used to keep it all one room, hidden beams most expensive. Measure and draw out what you want first for best quotes. Don't forget that a staircase will need a sloping ceiling above it.

Have a certified architect lay out what you need. This will be required by the building dept in your area.

Building the floor may be the lest of your problems. You also have to get heat and electric to the area. This may require an increase in furnace size and a larger electrical service.
