    OK...

    I did this experiment combining magnesium ribbon and zinc chloride. Unless I'm mistaken the equation looks like this:

    Mg (s) + ZnCl2 (aq) ---> MgCl2 (aq) + Zn (s)

    However, during the experiment the reactants effervecsed. Was this chlorine gas before it recombined with magnesium or am I missing something here?

    Yup, you missed something. :)

    Don't worry, 90% or the people (students) I know, including myself, lol, wouldn't have guessed the significant of a similar reaction if my teacher did not explained that.

    What is the form of ZnCl2? It is in solution. That means what?
