I have a black and white wire that are "hot" and a black and white wire that goes to the light switch. I connected the white wires, including the white wire from the fixture together and did the same with the black wires. The light switch was backwards, on was off and off was on. Than the breaker began to trip. I know this is an unusual situation, the wiring is not quite right but I need a solution without rewiring the whole situation which would be improbable

Connect black wire from power to black wire from switch.

Connect white wire from switch to black wire from light. Mark white wire with tape to show it is hot.

Connect white wire from light to white wire from power.

Should be good to go.

Do not do the above! It is a code violation.

The black wire from the supply needs to be connected to the white wire to the switch. Mark the wihie with either black tape or black sharpie.

The black wire coming back from the switch connects to the black wire of the device. The white power supply conductor connects to the white conductor on the device.

NEC code mandates that white can carry to a switch but black has to be the return conductor,
