    Depends on where you are. In Ontario it stays on your DMV records and if not paid you can't get your license plate renewal stickers or renew your drivers license until you pay outstanding fines.

    I would imagine it is the same in some States in the US; so say where you and you will get correct information.

    Got a ticket in mb like 9yrs ago I am certain I paid but now have a collection agency in Ontario calling and I live in ab.

    Statute of limitations never runs out in any province for anything to do with driving violations, parking or otherwise. I can tell you quite honestly, it is completely unheard of for a collection agency to be chasing you for an unpaid violation. DMVs across Canada do not hand this over to independent contractors.

    I would have to say ignore their phone calls, letters, etc. and they will eventually go away. I have no idea where they picked up that information unless they unlawfully tapped into the DMV computers. This is all government information.

    Like I said above, and it is probably the same at the DMV there, if you haven't paid it, then how did you acquire your renewed license or stickers for the last nine years.
