Most students will not need to claim their Grant on their taxes if the grant is used for legitimate school expenses such as tuition, textbooks, course fees and more. The general rule for Grant use is that if you use the grant money only for things required of everyone at your school, you do not need to claim the grant as income. If you use the money for non-qualifying expenses, however, you will need to claim the amount used as income. For example, if you get $4K in Grant money and use $500 for non-qualifying expenses and the rest for tuition, you must claim $500 as income on your tax return
