I picture solutions in my mind and I see a cylinder as a sheet of paper wrapped around into a circle. Open the paper back up and the surface is length X width.

to be clear:
$Area_{cylinder}=2(\text{area of the circular end}) + (\text{area of the side}) = 2\pi r^2 + 2\pi r h$
