When I was a kid my godfather opened an account for me and has been putting money in it for years. I have since lost contact with him and I am trying to figure out where my money is as I need it now. I don't know the name of the bank or ne of his info besides his name. Is there anyway I can find out where that account is located?

I don't think you can, wouldn't your parents know what bank he used? Most likely it's the same one. If you don't speak with him anymore did you have a falling out? Are you sure he didn't close the account?

Edit: Also if you don't have the account number, which they won't give you if you found the bank and called, you can't withdraw. I think he will have to contact the bank or at least give you the account number. Can't you call him?

Would the credit bureau be able to help you?

I've never heard of the credit bureau helping anyone!

Just kidding but the credit bureaus are independent organisations that keep track of things you buy on credit, they are not the bank police and do not have access to every bank account at every bank.

After a certain period of inactivity, an account is deemed unclaimed. Those accounts are turned over to the state, whose job it is to try to locate the account holders. If you know the state, call them and ask about their lost bank accounts department. They may call it something else, but I'll bet they have one.

In Arizona, for example, the department is called the "Unclaimed Property Unit" of the State Department of Revenue.

The process excon refers to is called "escheat" (the State (es) cheats you out of your money ;) ). Seriously, each state does have a time frame where inactive accounts are sent to the state.

The problem here is there is no indication the account is inactive. We have no idea whether the account was held in trust for the OP or just an account the godfather was using that he earmarked for him. Since they have lost touch, its possible the godfather decided to use the money himself.

INHO looking for the account with the scarce amount of info the OP has is fruitless task. He stands a better chance of finding the godfather.
