Hi All,

I have a 2003 Lincoln Navigator that is losinf compression. The dealership advised me that #7 dropped compression and #'s 3, 1 & 2 are beginning to drop compression. They advised me that the repair for 1 cylinder head is $2875. Is there anything else I can do besides pay nearly $4k for an engine and labor??

I assume that's a 7.3 power stroke?

If it is... has it been checked for cavitation damage? You'd also likely have coolant loss as well if it is.

I'd recomment getting a second opinion since you are talking that much money... If that's not a diesel... you could get a remanufactured engine for not a lot more than that.

I have no idea whether it's a 7.3 power stroke. I don't believe it has been checked for cavitation damage. However, it doesn't appear to be leaking coolant. I priced a remanufactured engine for $2k but would need someone to put it in. Lincoln of course said they would for $3k... that will not be happening. The truck has 118,000 miles and is not a diesel.

Don't think it is a power stroke, that's a Diesel and not sure Navigator had a diesel. Is the vehicle having issues? What prompted the cylinder test? What was the compression #s. Could be a valve or head gasket.

It's likely a 2WD 5.4L SFI DOHC 8cyl. I've worked on this engine and I suspect a blown head gasket. Did the engine ever overheat? This is a quality, time-tested engine, which can easily go 300,000 miles. I would get it repaired. Shop for price and warranty with other Ford dealerships in the area, if you want. IMO, they quoted you a fair price to replace the head gasket, machine the head, repair any valve damage, and replace the valve guides and valve seals.

No, the engine never overheated. The truck sputters when you try to drive it and it shakes a lot. I thought it was just fuel injectors because the car wouldn't accelerate. It took me minutes to get the car from 0 - 40.

It was an option.. and an expensive one ( I know someone that has a diesel Navigator)... they would know it if they had it. They would have to put diesel in it.

And I see they didn't have that.
