    Fax software
I am looking for a fax software program so that I can receive a fax on my computer. I have cable internet service which may make a difference? I want to get rid of my fax telephone line as it is a rip off: way too expensive. I have looked at some of the free fax programs on line, but am unsure if they work with cable. How can I find one that is trustworthy.

Your computer has a modem. Just about EVERY computer made in the last 10 years has a fax modem built in. Look on the back for a telephone jack. You may not be using it, but you have one.

Faxing is an analog process and requires a phone line. Some cable services provide VoIP lines that are capable of faxing. However, to use your internet connection to send and receive faxes means using a service. The service provides you with a telephone number where people can fax you. When a fax is received you get an e-mail notification. You then log into the service's web site to download or view/print the fax.

To send a fax you upload a file to the WEB site and they fax the document to your intended recpients.

The only service I know is efax.com.

Take a look at this list for internet fax options.

Also, you don't need a dedicated fax line, you can use your regular telephone line as a fax. Just make sure when you are expecting a fax, that no one answers the ring, instead, set the fax machine to auto answer. If a person calls, you should be able to hear them on the speakerphone, so you can immediately pick up the fax handset to stop the handshaking.

Thanks for all of your answers. Its nice to know there are people who are so very willing to help. My computer does not have a modem as I had it built to my specs last fall and since I had no need for a modem I did not have one installed. As of now, I have two phone lines. I will be changing one phone to cable phone service with Time Warner. They want to charge me $29.95 for my fax line. Going back about 10 years ago, I had a fax program that when a fax was received it showed on my computer screen and I clicked and printed. It was that easy. At that time I had a phone line into my computer. Can I do that with cable service?

If you don't have a phone line (be it a regular phone or VoIP) then you can't send or receive faxes directly. You have to use a service. The service will send you an e-mail, maybe even have a notice on screen. You will then need to log into their web site to see and print the fax.
