    h1b f1 joint filing clarifications
    Hi,

I am on H1 from last 6 yrs. My wife did masters in 2011 and she converted from H4 to F1. She also worked on CPT/OPT in 2011.
For 2011 tax returns, I filed jointly in turbo tax. Below are my questions
    (1) Is filing in turbo tax OK, since she is on F1 ?
    (2) claimed Hope/Life time credits, is that OK?
    (3) Since on F1, she was exempted from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes on her w2, since we filed jointly , does she have to pay back FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes?

Please clarify and if any amendments, how I have to do it.

    Regards

    1) Yes.

    2) Yes

    3) No; she is STILL exempt from FICA even though she is filing jointly with you.

    No amendments are needed.
