I guess you renew differently where you are at, here, they just renew I don't sign or do anything.

On your ticket, what was done with the judge, if you took the school were they going to suspend the ticket and not apply points ? If so then you were never convicted of the ticket, and it is not reported,
If the school was part of the punishment and the judge found your guilty, then it is reported.

I just don't understand what you have to do to renew ? Since in 35 plus years of driving I have never had to do any paper work to renew car insurance.

Your insurance company is most likely to check with the Driver's License Division/Motor Vehicle and any points you have against you will pop up - any violations, etc. Your insurance company wants to know if you are a good risk.
