We removed some tiles around the shower pan because we noticed a stain on the floorboards in the hall near the shower. I thought the builders either didn't have a proper shower pan or they didn't put in the waterproofing membrane. I was wrong. The concrete was damp but we believe it was a result of our son blocking the drain and playing in the water causing a big mess. No lasting damage was done.
Now I need to repair the concrete and tile but I don't know what to do. It was made of troweled on concrete over wire mesh - not cement backerboard. There are chunks of concrete still adhering to the mesh in some areas of the 10x30" exposed area.
Do I chisel that away and put up backerboard cut to fit the hole? Do I buy some mix and trowel on new concrete? Suggestions?

Remove mesh and fit a piece of concrete board in area. Seal seam between new and old. Then you should be good to go.

Another option if you keep having problems - I'm just a mom with no money who fixes what I can myself. I had a leaking shower floor and after paying for it to be repaired a few times, realized the problem was greater than thought. It was ugly anyway, so I ripped the whole thing out... tile, shower pan, etc.

When I started the rebuilding process (admittedly with help from a kindly gentleman friend!) we found a great product, which was a styrofoam-type shower pan liner, over which there was a water-proof membrane. This system (no longer remember what it was called) was WAY better than the concrete system used previously and it was very easy to install. No problems since.
