The last couple of weeks have been really akward because he compliments me way too much, and asks if I would ever like a guy like him and he told my friends that he was going to ask me out, but that would just ruin our friendship. What do I do?

If he ask you out you tell him no. Tell him you don't like him that way, that you don't want to ruin your frienship.

Tell him you just want to be friends.

Be honest with him.

If you like him go for it. If you don't be honest with him. It's simple. If you were good enough friends from the beginning then Nothing can take that away. True friends always forgive.
