When installing a kitchen sink strainer on a Porcelain on Steel sink, do I use "plumber's putty" or "silicon caulk"? I keep getting conflicting advice.

We've always used plumbers putty. My dad started the company in 1975 and we've never had problems using plumbers putty. On some finishes, the manufacturer claims that plubming putty will damage the finish. I've personally never seen that on porcelain or stainless steel stinks, but I'm not saying it couldn't occur on certain brands.

In the circe of plumbers in our area and that I regularly talk to, very few use caulk instead of plumbers putty. Good luck.

Homeowners use caulk. They regret it if they have to change it out.

Caulk seals better, but yes when you have to change it out, it's a pain!
