My husband and I want to start trying for a baby but first I want to talk to a doctor about my health. I know that some stds are tested once you get pregnant but what if you want to get tested for everything under the sun before you get pregnant? I need to get a pap smear and was hoping to also ask to get tested for herpes and talk about preconception. When I make an appointment do I tell them that I would like to get a pap smear and get tested for herpes?or do I wait until my appointment to tell them I want to be tested for herpes?

Tell the receptionist when you call to make the appointment that you need a papsmear and you would like to talk to the doc about trying to get pregnant. You only need to ask your doc for an STD screening and ask him/her to please include a screening for herpes. It is not necessary to tell the receptionist that info.
