I am replacing a ceiling fan speed switch, the fan also has a light kit fyi. The person that put the last one in it didn't hook it back up properly and it fried the switch out. My problem now is I don't know what colored wire goes where. I know that the black goes to the L but after that I don't know. The one that I just took off has Black to the L a orange one in 1 a purple in 2 and a yellow one in 3. Now obviously this isn't right. So do I run the wires from the reverse speed switch? They are the purple brown and gray wires. Please help.

Can not say for certain, but it is very common to have: brown (tan) wire go to 'L,' black to #1, blue to #2, and yellow #3. If this helps let us know.
