My almost 6y/o min pin was diagnosed and hospitalized with pancrentites a couple months ago. So I feel very limited on what he can eat. The vet told me no more treats, bones, table scraps, raw hides, pig ears, dental sticks, none of it. I've been feeding him the reccomened 1/4 cup of dry food twice a day with a crude fat content of 9% min. I've tried other foods with even a 10 or 11% fat and they do not agree with him anymore. He is vomiting on a weekly basis a good week being once and a bad week being three - four times. I can't keep any fat on him, he is all skin and bones. His personality has not changed at all. He still plays periodicly during the day. It is winter where we are now so he hasn't had regualr exercise as we are also learning how to juggle our schedules with a new baby, and it's been much to cold to go anywhere outside for a period. So the weight that he's dropped isn't from exercise I know that. In August he weighed 12lbs and now when I put him on the scale at home he is only 7lbs. I don't know what to do with him. The vet told me his pancrentites is now a life time thing and when it flares up there will always be a next time. I don't know if this is a continuous flare up with his weekly vomiting because his bowel movements are normal, no diareha at all this time. What could be happening to my beloved dog?

Has the vet rules out diabetes ? What all did he test for?

Sometimes the two go hand and hand, but not always, that is diabetes and pancreatitis. The pancreas produces insulin to supply the body. Your pet has been diagnosed with a chronic condition, which means ongoing. I suggest talking to your vet about this.

Reading from his invoice they gave me in Sept the tests were a snap CPL, complete urinalysis, comprehensive diagnostic profile, and blood work. He did say that it wasn't diabetes but that the two go hand in hand so now that you mention it maybe it has developed? I will make an appointment with his vet for asap. I don't know much about canine diabetes, is it difficult to manage?

Canine diabetes is treated much the same as human. Insulin injections, which are not painful and dietary changes. Dietary changes are the most difficult to implement as you can imagine, as you are having difficulty now. But once a routine is established between monitoring blood glucose, insulin injections and food, you will never notice a change in lifestyle for your pet.

Thank you and I will. We are going to the vet later this afternoon so hopefully we will have some answers soon :)

The comprehensive panel is a blood profile, of which it includes glucose. Glucose is also detected in urine. It doesn't *sound* like diabetes but it never hurts to check it again.

Well its not diabetes or his pancreas. The x-rays showed all the signs of a blockage. He's lost 1/3 of his body weight in a matter of that last month and a half, so his insides have begun to contract making it difficult to see what's going on with just an x-ray. They are not sure if it is a blockage or a tumor. He needs exploratory surgery just to see what's going on then surgery to fix the problem(s). Hes lost so much weight the dr can't guaruntee that he will bounce back or even make it through the surgery, and they are extremely expensive. Basically he is slowly starving himself to death. It's just these last 2 weeks his appearance has drastically changed or else we would have got to the vet a lot sooner then now. After a long discussion with the dr, tech, and my husband we have all decided given his history and chances of survival it is best to take this weekend and spoil the heck out of him, let him know how loved he is and come Monday he will sadly be euthanized. As much as it breaks my heart, deep down I know it is what's best for him in the long run. Thank you for your help and suggestions on what it could be, I can't express how much we appreciate your concern. But for now I'm going to spend my time cuddling with my boy.

AS I am reading your post and writing this I am also in situation that I cannot process. I just recently lost our eldest dog Pringles and she was 17 while having my mini pin Cheuy confined at the vet. Vet said she has kidney and liver issues and must change dite with proper supplementation. Along with ailing kidney and liver she is severely anemic and had IV to relief this. She gained back some weight after 3 weeks but on the 4th and now 5th drastic weight loss is obvious to the point of seeing her hip bones poking out... I am so not ready and very much emotionall just thinking about her condition. In fact I am still grieving about the recent loss of my 17 yr old girl.. It is overwhelming to the point that I can not work and went awol... I can think straight and just sobbing from time to time. I was even hospitalized just before Pringles died- I went on a panic mode and had a nervus breakdown.. And now I don't know how to react and what to do... I am too afraid. -macysantos
