Can a sump pump pit be converted into a ejector pit?
I have two sump pits in my basement. I want to add a bath and a wet bar to the basement. Can I convert one of the sump pits into an ejector pit? One of the sump pits ejects water out side and the other ejects it to the city waste water which is up to code in my area. I think there is tile that runs into the pit that is connected to the city sewage. If I put a basin into that pit can I fill around the basin with gravel and would that allow the other sump pit to work correctly? What other issues can I run into with this configuration?

I don't see any problem why you couldn't convert one of your old pits into sewer ejector pit. However, you have to do it the right way. I like you are planning to use basin with sealed lid. Size it properly though. You can call manufacturer and their engineers will tell you exactly what you need according to the size of your house. Also, you will need 2" dedicated vent that will go all the way to the roof. This vent cannot be combined with other house vents. As far as discharge goes, sewer ejector will pump out sewer as high as needed to reach the main sewer with adequate slope. From that point on, sewer will flow on its own and down the slope to the City sewer. Do not connect to sewer pipe smaller than 3". Also, consult with your electrician as you will need at least 20 AMP dedicated circuit to run sewer ejector pump(s).

Other than that - you are all set to go. Good luck with your project. Let me know how it went. Milo

    Hi Ike

You said, "I think there is tile that runs into the pit that is connected to the city sewage"...

If this is the case then this "tile" is probably a perimeter drain tile and I wouldn't suggest messing with this pit in any way. Here, it would be better to keep the system as you have it and simply drop a new sewage ejector and pit close to the new bathroom/wet bar you want to install.

Let me know more here, OK?

Yesterday I found out more info on the two sump pumps. One is actually a sump pump and pushes water out to the yard. The other one is actually already set up to be a sewage pit. I removed the cover and found that there is already a seal-able basin I just need a new cover and ejector pump. What through me off was the debris in the bottom of the pit. The cover was steal and had rotted out so much that some fell into the bottom of the pit. And there were a few rocks probably kicked in when the house was under construction. I didn't see any holes in the basin for drain tiles. Thank you all for your help!
