My daschound has been very quiet, unmotivated, depressed looking, just wants to be nursed all the time. She is usually very enthustastic, running, jumping and going crazy. She loves attention, but lately the last couple of days she is just not her self?

I gave her some aleovera juice the other night and she seemed to perk up by the next morning. But she is sickly again today.

She dos'nt seem to be in any pain, eating and drinking OK. Toileting OK. No vomiting. Been wormed recenly, no ticks.

Is there any information you could suggest?

How old is your pet ? I am thinking pregnancy, but you haven't indicated that may be the cause. It is hard to judge on the internet and we don't diagnose because of this. Do you think a vet visit may be in order ?

Have there been any major changes in your household; a death in the family; someone new moving in, or out?

Sometimes we don't consider these possibilities for our pets, but they can make an impact.

She is either sick or injured - pregnancy is another possibility.

I have a dachshund also and have had a few others in the past. They can be very sensitive to shots and medications. Has your dog had innoculations recently? This can be a common sensitivity in this breed. They still need the basic shots but mine, for example, gets a dose of benedryl (dosed for her size by the vet) prior to getting any shots.

She also acted like this when she got her teeth cleaned, for a few weeks. She was apparently overdosed on the sedative, which has since been adjusted for subsequent teeth cleanings.

This can also be an indication of an illness or injury. One thing is that this breed is constantly looking for things to eat. Your dog may have ingested something that is causing it pain and discomfort. These dogs will eat all kinds of crazy stuff - kitchen sponges, etc. Only a vet will be able to tell if your dog has done this.

The breed is also highly susceptable to disc degeneration in their backs as well as shoulder dislocations and deterioration because of their love of jumping and running all over, combined with their short legs and long backs. Your dog may be in pain. I would not encourage the dog to run or jump.

You will need to take the dog to a vet and they should be able to figure out the problem. Think about whether anything has changed in your household. For example, installation of hardwood floors in my house preceded my dog slinking off and hiding under a bed, not wanting to come out except to eat for a couple of days. She had slipped a disc in her back, apparently lost traction not having the carpet to land on when she jumped off the couch.

Thank you for your response, I have checked Hymani for pain in her back, neck, legs, etc, & she is not pregnant & doesn't seem to have any pain. I just felt she was not well. I gave her 5mls of ALEO VERA JUICE that I take myself & raised my children on, next morning she was back to her self again, next day she was a bit funny again, so I have been putting about 10mls of ALEO VERA JUICE in her wet food for a few days now & she seen much better, I will continue this for a week or so, she might have a tummy bug or something, It seems to be working. My understanding with Aloe Vera juice is that you are firstly giving too much. It is advised to give 1-2 drops per pound of body weight. There is such thing as too much of a good thing.

Aloe vera juice helps with the GI tract if there is inflammation. Aloe vera helps with inflammation. If your dog does not have any inflammation in the GI tract, that you're not really doing any good. On top of that, there are no actual studies that Aloe Vera juice does anything to help dogs out. In fact, you can get her sicker by one, over dosing her, and two, not consulting a vet, and three, treating something you have no idea what you are treating.

Dogs that are off for really no apparent reason can mean more than just a 24 hr stomach bug. Does she go to dog parks? Come into direct contact with other dogs? If so, she may have gotten a doggy virus that is causing her to be off. Even if she hasn't come into direct contact with another dog or go to dog parks, all she really needs to do is walk the same steps as a sick dog and clean her feet.

Waiting a full week plus the few days you have already waited is not advisable. If she doesn't perk up by tomorrow, I would suggest to take her to the vet. Dogs don't have to be squallering in pain to show you that they hurt. Some breeds, such as Doxies, are really good at hiding their pain even while you are poking and proding at them.

Dogs that appear to be off can be suffering from Pancreatitis.

Sometimes a quick fix with a home treatment works for a dog's ailments. And sometimes it doesn't. The longer you wait to see a vet, the more costly your visit will be and the sicker your pet is going to be.

Its time to call the vet.

I'm concerned, too, that you're experimenting with something which hasn't been determined safe, for a condition that hasn't been diagnosed. When you have a sick dog, you take it to the vet. Dogs rarely get sick and when they do, it usually requires vet care. Your approach is irresponsible.
