Exemption NY state and city tax as J-1 scholar
    Hi there!

I read in a lot of places that as a J-1 scholar from the Netherlands I am exempt from state and local taxes in NY (besides federal tax). However, I cannot find a good source to show and convince my employer. Does anyone know where I can find this?

    Kind regards, Jelmer

Where did you read this? I'm in NY State. Income is income, and it is taxable.

Your employment is school related, correct?

Most states do NOT honor tax treaties, but I believe New York does.

Go to the source: Contact the NY state tax authority and ASK. If you go to the website, you can ask by email.
