Heater turns off after a couple minutes.Is it the thermostat? And if so can a laymen like myself replace it.

If it is indeed a thermostat problem, yes, a laymen should be able to replace it with guidance from us. However, to figure out if the thermostat is indeed the problem, it may take a bit more knowledge and technical skills.
