I'm looking to replace my computer. The recommended specs on one of the programs I run, recommends dedicated memory. But I have read that shared memory provides better performance.

Assuming a computer has a large amount of memory (8-12G) does it really matter? Are there any advantages to dedicated over shared memory. Or vice versa.

The days of shared and dedicated memory are well and truly over, it's all RAM..

If this program is making that recommendation you need to make sure it will run with the latest 64 bit OS, as it may have issues.

Are you maybe confused about what the requirements are? Perhaps it's calling for a separate graphics card with its own memory. Many systems use on board graphics that share memory but a dedicated card has dedicated memory for graphics use.

You're right. The recommendations state: "dedicated graphics card preferred"

The program runs on a WIN7, 64 bit laptop. But it's sluggish unless I disable some of the programs features and don't run any other programs at the same time. Processor, memory and graphics are all below recommended specs.

There's what you're looking for then. Look for something with a dedicated card.
