    I am over 65. Earn less than $19,000.00 social security and an ira earnings, do I need to file state tax. I have found I do not have have to file federal tax. Iowa is the state I live in. trish

    It depends on HOW MUCH your IRA distribution will be.

    If it was JUST the Social Security, I would say no tax return is required, but the IRA distribution is the wild card for which I cannot account.

    My social security and the ira distribution are less than $19,000 a year. According to federal taxes anything below $24,000 you do not have to file federal tax. Seems to me Iowa state tax shouldn't be much different/ post offices ,libraries here no longer carry state forms or instructions booklet , my cmputer won't let me download a form . I need a state tax instruction booklet for the state of Iowa. Trish

    Ira is $6,000 a year. Trish

    $6,000 plus $19,000 is $25,000, requiring that you file.
