Hi, my fiancé was admitted to the hospital yesterday but yet I don't know how he is doing or anything. I'm not allowed to call him at the hospital and I haven't heard anything from his family. Should I be worried? Or should I just be patient and wait for them to call me?

In the ER? Surgery? Intensive Care? Those 3 areas don't allow phone calls. We can't possibly know if you should be worried or not. Why not go there and ask at the information desk, find where he is, and ask the nurses station? They won't let you see him (unless his status has changed) but if he is your fiancé, I would think you'd want to be in the waiting room until he asks for you. A nurse can give him your name if he's awake. Why won't his family tell you anything?

Your first answer is very good. You can go to the hospital and ask questions at the front desk. Are you old enough to drive? You don't say much about this.

Do you have a good relationship with his family? Can he receive visitors? I would go to the hospital to see him. He can give the hospital consent to speak with you about his condition. Are you both adults? If he's not an adult, his parents can keep you away and out of the loop if they so choose.

This is covered by HIPAA. The boyfriend or someone acting on his behalf decides who can and cannot see him. Any medical info which is given out is in direct violation with HIPAA.

This person has no legal right to any information. Just for reference if a husband or wife refuses to sign to allow info to be given to the spouse the spouse cannot get it. If the situation is dire the spouse can go to Court and have himself/herself appointed to represent the patient.

In my area a hospital won't even disclose the name of a patient. You walk in and ask for "X" and you'll be told that info cannot be given out.

And then there's the whole issue, not legal, of why the fiancé is not allowed any information or visitatiion.
