Why does the main burner stay lit, only when the gas furnace has warmed up?
Has to jump from pilot to main valve to give gas valve 24 volts

Because pilot flame sensing device (most likely a flame sensor) is not sensing the pilot, therefore not allowing power to the main valve. Either that or a bad ignition module. Don't be jumping the gas valve anymore. You need to have this checked by a qualified tech and have it fixed before you endanger yourself any further. Im assuming you have an intemitant spark/pilot ignition module/control? Something along the lines of either a white rodgers, or honeywell s8--- (fill in the blanks for me.)
