I have received numerous IM and EM copies of US passports from people who claim to be women livivng in Ghana. Now I have one which I would like to check, to determine the status of. Is this wasting your time or can this be accomplished?

Not without actually physically examining it. But, from most of questions about Ghana and romance scams on this site, she's definitely scamming you. Do not send her anything.
