    Since it has expired over 6 years, you no longer have a legal status, I would go though a immigration attorney at this point.

    Did you have a "conditional" permanent resident status? (i.e. usually valid for 2 years, usually gotten through a recent marriage) Or did you have a regular permanent resident status? (such cards are usually issued for 10 years)

    If the former, then you had to apply for Removal of Conditions before it expired, and you now have no legal status.

    If the latter, then your status is permanent and not having a card or having an expired card doesn't affect your status. You can just apply to renew the card at any time.

    I am assuming that you've been in the U.S. for this whole time. Otherwise, if you've been away from the U.S. for too long, you've abandoned your permanent resident status.

    If the expired card had ten years term on it, you're OK even the card expired. You must file form I-90 to obtain a new card. The fees are $450.
