Bathtub has rust around drain, through the actual tub too around the drain. It has caused water to seep into the tiny rust holes. Is there a cheap fix??

Nothing less will fix THAT problem.

Before you replace the tub why not dry it off good and steel wool the rust off. Now epoxy around the drain and see if that holds. If not then replacing the tub's your only option, Good luck, Tom

I understood there was rust THROUGH the tub.. creating a perforation and leak.. and not just a damaged porcelain coating.

Doesn't mention a leak... just sounds like actual damage to the tub at this point...

I'm picturing something similar to the picture below... but with small holes around the perimeter. Cast iron tub is super thick in this area, so may be repairable!

YES! The last attached image from "massplumber2008" is identical to the tub.

Cool, then get a rust remover (CLR) and a wire brush and clean the area up real well.

Use the porc-a-fill to fill the areas just low of flush to the surrounding porcelain and after that dries paint on the porc-a-fix to flush with the surrounding porcelain. Follow directions on the package for best results!

If you really want superior results you would remove the basket strainer from the tub (not very easy if you have never done it) and clean and patch all before installing a new tub strainer or new toe touch tub drain assembly in place!

SO, I Used CLR and A wire brush to clean up the area, follwed the directions on the package of porc-a-fill, and porc-a-fix and got GREAT results.

New tub strainer and it looks good as new.

I would clean the area with sand paper and then paint the entire tub with Rust o leums tub and tile paint. Amazon.com: tub and tile paint
